3 Safety Measures That Will Help Protect Your Business From Fire

3 Safety Measures That Will Help Protect Your Business From Fire

You probably already have a plan in place in case of fire … but do you have the equipment needed to help protect your business and assets?

FireSafe Equipment can help keep your business and employees safe during a fire.

1) Clean Agent Systems This fire suppression system is made up of a chemical or inert gas that helps stop fire from spreading quickly. Because it’s a gas it doesn’t damage your equipment, computers, sensitive documents, electrical cords, etc. Traditional sprinkler systems tend to cause more damage than the fire because of the added water or foam used to put out the fire.

2) Fire Extinguishers You should already have these in place. Do you have both portable handheld ones and wheeled extinguishers to help combat fires in different locations in your building? Do you have ones that spray water as well as the type that sprays wet or dry chemicals? Did you know that you should be having them checked regularly? FireSafe Equipment Co. provides training so that you can conduct your own safety checks.

3) Emergency Lighting Having the appropriate lighting can help save lives during a blackout or fire. These lights that help guide your employees to safety are required by law to be checked regularly.

Firesafe Equipment can provide regular inspections, testing and maintenance that will keep you compliant with all of these codes.

Christmas Time Fire Safety

We get asked every year about Christmas trees and other holiday fire risks.  If you’re wondering if your tree is a fire risk, the answer is yes, but you can do a lot to make your Christmas safer.  According to the National Fire Prevention Association, only about 160 fires in the United states each year are due to Christmas trees, which is a relatively small fraction of the more than 350,000 home fires every year. Having the right Firesafe Equipment on hand, such as fire extinguishers, is important to have if a fire breaks out, but fire safety starts with prevention!

So, how do you make sure your tree is unlikely to catch fire? Artificial trees with fire retardant are the best bet, three quarters of Christmas tree fires involve living trees, but if you love your live tree here are a few important tips to keep you safe this holiday season:

1) Make sure your live tree isn’t too dry.  When buying a tree make sure the needles don’t come off easily when you lightly shake the tree.  Make sure you water your tree to keep it more resistant to catching fire and recut the base just before putting it in water.

2) Make sure you always turn off your lights at night.  Most lethal house fires occur when you’re asleep and unable to react.  Even though it can be tempting to keep the tree lit up at night, 44% of Christmas tree fires are related to lights and electrical problems.

3) This may be obvious, but keep your tree away from fires and heating elements of any kind. About a quarter of all Christmas tree fires are caused by candles, heaters, and other heat sources being too close to the tree.  The rule of thumb is to keep your tree at least 3 feet away from any heat source.

4) If you’re using old lights, inspect them thoroughly for any fraying and never use lights with any wire damage.  If you’re buying new lights, make sure they were evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, like Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

5) As beautiful as they are, the longer a Christmas tree is up, the dryer and more dangerous it becomes.  Compost or otherwise dispose of your tree away from your home.

We hope you have a safe, festive, and beautiful winter holiday season.  If you’re concerned about the risks of a house fire, be sure to contact us to learn about the equipment you need to reduce risk and have peace of mind.

Fire Pit Safety

Summertime is the perfect time to spend outside around a warm campfire with friends and family telling stories and roasting marshmallows. Unfortunately, without taking the proper precautions, a lovely night outdoors could quickly become disastrous. Please keep these simple safety tips in mind the next time that you plan on having a night around the fire.

⭐ Make sure that you fire pit is on a nice flat surface. This will help reduce the chances of the fire spreading.

⭐ Check the local fire danger level and weather report. If the fire danger level is high, avoid having a fire. Wind could also pose a risk.

⭐ The bigger the fire, the bigger the risk. Keep the fire small and easily managed.

⭐ Be aware of your surroundings. Keep the fire pit at a safe distance from objects, buildings, trees, etc.

⭐ Be aware of activity. Make sure that children and animals are not getting too close.

⭐ Be prepared. If something should occur, make sure that you have quick and easy access to water and/or a fire extinguisher as well as a phone to call 911.

⭐ Never leave a burning fire unattended. Fires spread fast. Do not take that risk.

⭐ Put it out. Make sure that you know how to safely put a fire out.

False Alarm

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Your smoke alarm is going off, but there is a good news. There's no fire! How could this be? Here is a list of some of the different things that may cause a "false alarm."

◯ Burning Food

◯ Candle, Cigarette, or Incense smoke

◯ Fireplace Smoke

◯ Power Interruptions

◯ Faulty Connection

◯ Small Bugs or Insects

◯ Shower Steam

◯ Furnace

◯ Dirt and Dust

◯ Low Batteries

◯ High Humidity

A false alarm may be startling and inconvenient, but it is not nearly as bad as a smoke alarm that does not go off when there is a fire. Please do not remove smoke alarms without replacing them. If you experience a false alarm, you can call your local fire department and request that they come out to access the situation. Remember that it is always best to be safe than sorry.
